Get To Work on that Bucket List

Time continues even if you don’t

Many people have one. It’s that list of things you want to accomplish before you “kick the bucket.”

I’ve crossed some items off my list in a casual way. Sleeping next to the Arctic Ocean on the Winter Solstice is but one example.

I worked on it when I had the money and the time was convenient. It’s not like taking a vacation. I save and I dream, and I plan for the big-ticket items.

That list has taken on a sudden urgency as of late. My knee is bent and my foot is aimed. A rare cancer diagnosis coupled with serious internal surgery started stealing time from me two years ago. I’m still healing and waiting for the other shoe to drop. In fact, I’m not healed enough to start planning for my next adventure. I want to go to England to attend the Manchester Derby, preferably at the Etihad. I admonish myself for wasting the good years of my life pounding out code.

Most of what I want to do involves traveling significant distances. I don’t invite my wife, family or friends to go with me. I need solitude to focus on what I’m doing. There will be admiration, journaling, introspection, and derring-do. I’m selfish that way. It’s not their bucket list.

Others may have simpler lists, of course.

I implore you to make your plans and execute them before you get too old and sick. The rewards, for me, have been humility, fascination, beauty, and an enrichment of knowledge I had no idea were possible.
